I’ve seen this twice myself in the last few weeks, and today had another reseller contact me with the same exact symptoms. The first one happened mid February for a client of ours and occurred right after applying the February patches from Microsoft. At first I was suspecting that an MS patch had caused it, but now I’m not so sure. The issue is simple, users cannot logon to the Remote Desktop Server or Terminal Server at all.
I tried many things, reboots, removing the most current applied patches. All to no avail.
I noticed however that the Windows Management Instrumentation service was not started, and when I went to start it, it gave an error message saying “Cannot find the specified file” or something similar.
After much digging, I figured out that somehow the WMI Service DLLs were not registered. I ran the command below from an administrative command prompt to re-register the WMISVC.DLL
regsvr32 /s c:\windows\system32\wbem\wmisvc.dll
Before I could even switch back to start the service, it was started!
I’m left wondering now exactly what caused the problem. Was it the reboot or was it something a patch did whilst it was installing, or was it something entirely different?
If you have had this happen to you or one of your clients, please comment below as I’m keen to track down what it is causing the issue.
